Limitations of UAVs in Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace engineering is developing. Vehicles that have no pilot are being used in aviation. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle that is known as UAV Is one of the major topics in aerospace engineering. Remotely controlled aircrafts are largely used in in different areas. Military is one of the well-known areas that UAVs actively used. Except military purposes it is a common issue using these vehicles for research and development projects.

UAV market is going to triple in ten years. Analytics show that unmanned aircraft systems will be most developing field in aviation. In next ten years only 70% of UAV production is going to be used in military. Commercial missions, research and development studies and hobbies are going to be major fields for UAVs.

Automation in aerospace engineering is much more better ever than before. Planning a flight route or task and managing it autonomously is possible. New steps and opportunities adopted new philosophies in aerospace engineering. Today’s UAV technology has broad specifications that reflect all of these developments. Since it is complex platform UAV vehicles are named as UAS that means Unmanned Aircraft Systems. These systems have two sides as aircraft and ground stations. These are used in civil world. Drones which have radio control has practical usage in daily basis.

Automation of UAV in Aerospace Engineering

Automation level of aircraft system is not fully developed, yet. It is one of the recently emerging topics in aerospace engineering. It has different categories that are highly related with unmanned aerial vehicles. Sensors, communication protocols, route planning, maneuver control, planning and cooperative flight are basic topics in automation of aircraft. Collecting information during flight is easy ever than before.

There is a classification for unmannaed aircrafts. Autonomous aircraft and remotely piloted aircraft are different topics that need to considered when talking about unmanned aviation vehicles. Both of them has different technology basics and advantages.

UAV Usage and Future of UAV in Aerospace Engineering

Military usage is most popular field that use UAVs. Since it is military usage there are major developments about these aviation vehicles. It is possible to use an UAV with guns in warrior zone. Or it is possible to get intelligence by using extra devices. Endurance, light weight body, portable structure are general advanteges of UAVs in aerospace engineering.

There are different topics in UAV design

Topics in UAV

However there are limitations, too. UAVs are portable vehicles since a pilot does not use it. And it can be used in dangerous situations easily. But it is not as fast as manned aircrafts. Communication problem and controlling of UAVs are another point need to be studied. Data link between vehicle and ground control situating have to be seamless. Otherwise it is really hard to go further in UAV technologies.

Many organizations and manufacturers are developing UAVs. Getting a successful UAV is highly depended on engine technology, satellite structure and operational issues. Replacing EO/IR capabilities with radio frequency is most critical skill for UAV manufacturing. UAV technology is most recently developed technology in aviation. Its development has started new standards and horizons in aerospace engineering.
