Aerospace Engineering and Environment Friendly Aircraft


Global warming has more impacts ever than before even in aerospace engineering. Climate is changing rapidly. In all aspects different industries legal regulations are getting stricter. But what about flying? Is there any “green flying” definition for aerospace or aircraft industry? Is it possible to have environmental friendly aircraft?

Nowadays travelling with aircraft is more popular. Environmental impact of flying is increasing, too. Aviation is one of the fastest growing emission source. There is plenty of data about flight density, fuel consumption and emission of aircraft is available. Lots of industry leader companies and societies are working on technical details of aircraft. There is a lot of way measuring of emission and fuel efficiency.

Fuel efficiency and aerospace engineering has lots of things to mention. An aircraft has average fuel efficiency is 2.75 gal/mi (nearly 6.4 l/km) and 53.3 pounds of carbon dioxide is being produced during one air mile of flight (nearly 15.1 kg/km). An aircraft has 100 times more jet fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission than a car. However beyond simple details emission according to another measurement that is per passenger mile flying has less emission than busses especially after 2000.

Emissions of aircraft varies on length of flight. With long flight it is possible to decrease per passenger mile carbon dioxide emissions down to below 0.20 kg. For road transport per passenger mile carbon dioxide emissions change between 0.18 and 0.44. In all transport types it is important to reduce individual vehicle usage for decreasing per passenger mile carbon dioxide emissions.

New technologies and organizations are critical for environmental friendly flying. When you consider simple technical details flying can be green only detailed priming. It is possible to go further with better capacity organization. Choosing larger planes and planning destinations are first point of green flights. On the other hand technological improvements are critical factor. On another side of being green fuel efficiency is important for flight costs. Using new technology like turbofan and turboprop engines that is more efficient make it possible to have less emissions.

Legal regulations about gas emission of aviation industry are not obtained properly. First steps are being taken by different societies. Nevertheless, aircraft production companies and commercial flight agents have contributions to green flight. For instance, manufacturing less weight parts is one of the most important point for production companies. Similarly, load factors of flight and seat density of plane are major organization topics for commercial flight agents.

Life is changing and future is coming. Plenty of data shows that decreasing of aviation emissions is an obligation. Different projects like Solar Impulse and microwave powered flight are in research and development period. It is sure it will take time to have milestones in this field. We need flying. We know that beyond aerospace engineering projects flying is most efficient way of transport in this manner.
